Dubai’s Ambitious Traffic Transformation: New Bridges, Lane Expansions & Road Upgrades to Slash Journey Times
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is accelerating the city’s infrastructure evolution with a major new traffic improvement plan designed to dramatically cut journey times, boost road capacity, and support the emirate’s rapid urban growth.
A Major Contract for Smarter Roads

As part of this initiative, the RTA has awarded a significant contract to develop the intersection of Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street with Al Awir Road and Al Manama Street. This project forms a key part of Dubai’s long-term traffic strategy, aiming to improve connectivity for commuters, residents, and businesses alike.
What’s Included in the Upgrade?

The development will deliver:
- 2.3 kilometers of new bridges to facilitate uninterrupted traffic movement.
- Expanded traffic lanes and upgraded service roads in both directions.
- Improved access points for residential and developing areas along the corridor.
These components work together to enhance traffic flow, reduce congestion, and support the city’s mobility demands as Dubai continues to grow.
Capacity & Journey Time Improvements

Once completed — targeted for the third quarter of 2028 — the upgraded route is expected to:
- Increase road capacity from 5,200 vehicles per hour to 14,400 vehicles per hour in both directions, representing a 176% improvement.
- Cut travel times dramatically, reducing journeys along the corridor from approximately 20 minutes to just 5 minutes.
These changes are set to make a measurable impact on daily commuter experiences, enhancing productivity and reducing stress on major arterial routes.
Supporting Dubai’s Growth & Quality of Life

According to Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, the project forms part of a broader master plan aimed at:
- Accommodating rising traffic volumes due to urban expansion.
- Enhancing mobility and accessibility across key residential and commercial districts.
- Ensuring smoother travel for more than 600,000 residents and visitors who depend on these routes daily.
Transforming Traffic with Smart Solutions

The initiative doesn’t just add physical capacity — it pioneers a smarter, more efficient road network by:
- Converting existing roundabouts into grade-separated intersections for free-flowing traffic movements.
- Adding dedicated ramps for right- and left-turn traffic to minimize bottlenecks.
- Upgrading local service roads to improve access and safety for neighbourhoods.
These improvements reflect Dubai’s commitment to a seamless, future-ready transport ecosystem that delivers both efficiency and quality of life for road users.
